Identify the funding route before developing an application

There are currently no group-funded PhD or postdoctoral vacancies. Enquiries are welcomed from strong candidates who have identified an external scholarship, fellowship, governmental sponsorship, institutional award, private funding source or another credible route for which the candidate is eligible.

Important distinction

Supervisory interest, naming a potential supervisor and submitting a formal Durham application do not by themselves constitute an offer of admission, a funding commitment or confirmation that a project can proceed.

A detailed enquiry is most useful when the funding position and scientific basis are already understood.

I have identified a specific funding scheme or source. I have checked that I meet the eligibility requirements. I know the application deadline. I understand which fees, living costs and research costs are covered. I have reviewed the group’s research and capabilities. I can explain why the proposed work is a good scientific fit. What to include in an initial enquiry

Do not begin with a generic request for “any funded position”. Provide enough information to assess eligibility, timing and research fit.

Funding route

Funding body, scheme name, eligibility, deadline, duration and current status.

Funding coverage

Tuition fees, stipend or living costs, research costs and any travel, visa or health-related support.

Scientific fit

Research area, concise project idea, relevant experience and why the Baxendale Group is an appropriate host.

Professional context

Current institution, degree or appointment and a link to an institutional profile, ORCID or publication record.
