Collaborate

Start with a substantive scientific or technical problem

The most productive collaborations begin with a clear question, an important limitation and a credible outcome. The group welcomes discussions where synthetic chemistry, process development, reaction engineering, automation or enabling technology can make a material difference.

Initial enquiries must remain non-confidential.

Do not include commercially sensitive, patent-sensitive, proprietary or unpublished confidential information. A suitable confidentiality route can be considered later if the initial discussion establishes scientific relevance.

A useful initial discussion

Provide enough context to assess relevance

The first message should be concise and non-confidential, but specific enough to understand the problem, evidence, timescale and intended outcome.

01

Problem

The scientific or technical limitation and why the limitation matters.

02

Current evidence

What has already been attempted, observed or established.

03

Desired outcome

The result, decision or deliverable the collaboration should support.

04

Route to delivery

Relevant timescale, potential funding mechanism and contributions from each party.

Collaboration pathway

From first contact to a defined project

No project or commitment is created by the initial enquiry.

  1. 1

    Non-confidential enquiry

Provide the problem, outcome, evidence, timescale and potential route.

  2. 2

    Scientific relevance review

Consider whether the group’s expertise and capacity are appropriate.

  3. 3

    Appropriate framework

If justified, identify the required funding, confidentiality and institutional route.

  4. 4

    Defined scope

Agree responsibilities, evidence, deliverables and decision points before work begins.

Explore relevance

Review the group’s capabilities first

The problem-led capabilities explorer can help identify relevant scientific and technical areas without presuming a particular solution.
